Kevin Durant’s Contract Update with the Rockets

Kevin Durant will not be on the court for Houston this upcoming season due to his expiring contract. However, he has secured a two-year contract extension with the Rockets valued at $90 million, which includes a player option for the 2027-28 season, as confirmed by his business partner, Rich Kleiman, to ESPN.

This new deal is roughly $30 million less than the two-year, $120 million contract he received during the offseason after being traded from the Suns at the age of 37.

This season, Durant is projected to earn $54.7 million, and with this new contract, his career earnings will officially hit $598.2 million—making him the highest-earning player in NBA history, surpassing LeBron James, who has earned $583.9 million, including future contracts.

Durant’s move to the Rockets came after a notable trade in July involving seven teams, wherein the Suns gained players like Jalen Green and Dillon Brooks, plus the 10th overall pick.

Last season, Durant played 62 games, averaging 26.6 points with a 43% shooting rate from beyond the arc. Unfortunately, the Suns didn’t make the playoffs, finishing with a record of 36 wins and 46 losses.

The Rockets had a strong finish in the previous season, securing the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference with 52 wins, only to be eliminated by the Warriors in a challenging seven-game series in the first round.

Once on the court, Durant is expected to enhance Houston’s offensive performance alongside All-Star big man Alperen Sengan by providing crucial perimeter scoring.

As a noteworthy statistic, KD currently ranks eighth on the NBA’s all-time scoring list and might surpass legends such as Wilt Chamberlain and Dirk Nowitzki this season, provided he maintains his health. For 16 consecutive seasons, Durant has averaged at least 25 points per game, placing him second on the all-time list, just behind LeBron James, who averaged 24.4 points for the Lakers last season, extending his career over 20 years since the 2004-2005 season.

In an earlier trade, the Nets had moved Durant to Phoenix at the 2023 trade deadline, receiving four first-round picks, alongside Mikal Bridges and Cam Johnson.
