Kevin Spacey returns to Cannes, but few seem to notice.

Kevin Spacey’s Return to Cannes: A Mixed Bag

Kevin Spacey’s appearance at Cannes this year is, well, quite understated. The promenade leading to the beach club doesn’t show much buzz—no fans or protesters, just a few folks soaking in the evening sun. It’s a reminder of a soft comeback, perhaps?

At The Better World Fund’s Gala Dinner, Spacey is honored with a Lifetime Achievement Award for his contributions to film and television. This marks a notable moment for two Oscar winners who’ve faced a career downturn due to allegations from over 30 men regarding sexual misconduct. It’s his first visit since 2016, right before the #MeToo movement took off.

Inside the Hotel Beach Club, photographers seem a bit disgruntled about the lack of star power at the event. Some guests try to catch attention by lifting their phones displaying names, while others might risk going unrecognized. “There’s no guest list,” one photographer expresses his frustration to a friend. “Who are these people?”

Spacey’s gala, while noteworthy, isn’t officially part of the Cannes Film Festival; it takes place at the nearby Carlton Hotel, a hotspot for the festival’s elite. The Better World Fund, established by Ted Turner, focuses on the arts and aims to promote a safer, more prosperous world.

Mira Nair, the Indian-American filmmaker known for Salaam Bombay! and Monsoon Wedding, is a longtime supporter of the fund. Upon her arrival, she mentions that she only found out about Spacey’s invitation the day before the event. When asked if he was excited about being included, she hesitates slightly before responding.

As Spacey finally makes an entrance on the red carpet, the crowd of photographers surges forward, causing a bit of chaos. Someone accidentally knocks over a table, shattering a champagne glass. “Thank you for coming,” he says, maintaining a tense smile while chatting briefly with a TV crew. He avoids further questions and quickly makes his way past the waiting reporters, his eyes focused on the dinner table inside.

Meanwhile, on the promenade, a single protestor stands out. Ramilo Magalhes, a Brazilian climate activist, set up a display to protest against the devastation of the Amazon rainforest. His setup, resembling a hospital stretcher with charred tree branches, is striking. When asked about Spacey, Magalhes admits, “I don’t know the actor. Is he a good actor?”

Now, Spacey’s presence in Cannes isn’t just social; he has a professional angle too. He stars in Awakening, a low-budget thriller being marketed to foreign buyers at the festival. This week, Matt Hookings, the film’s author, producer, and star, noted that Spacey’s attendance was part of a strategic “guerilla marketing” effort. “If anyone told him, I could say he was in Cannes and received an award,” Hookings remarked. “But he’s here with Awakening, so that’s the real plug.”

As guests settle down for dinner at the Beach Club, Spacey hopes this gala marks the dawn of a new chapter. Yet, as the sun sets over the beach, it gives one pause. Is it truly a new beginning?
