Despite the 5-star freshman and starting lineup being welcomed as “Crab 5,” head coach Kevin Willard was Maryland's biggest headline throughout the NCAA tournament.
Thursday night marked the beginning of Men's Sweet 16, and Maryland was one of the few teams to win away from eternal glory. However, Willard appears to be focusing on his next job, not his current job.
The idea of Willard getting a vacant Villanova head coaching position was all talks leading up to Thursday's fourth-place match against Florida in Maryland, and it continued as the Terrapins reportedly completed an 87-71 defeat.
“The Maryland administrator told at least one prominent male basketball booster that Kevin Willard is set to leave for Villanova.” The Baltimore Sun reported Approximately an hour after the game's conclusion, we quote “a source of information about the situation firsthand.”
But Fox and NBC Sports' John Fanta I objected to the claim“The report is not true, a Maryland athletics official told me. “Our focus remains on maintaining Willard, the University of Maryland coach,” officials say.
So which is that? Maybe you can put the news straight from the horse's mouth?
“I don't know what I'm doing. I'm not talking to my agent, I'm not talking to my wife.” Willard said “I have an agent and I'm sure he's talking to people, but I don't know.”
Willard's answer was creepy to when he was asked the same question three years ago when he was in charge of a Maryland job while coaching at Seton Hall. Willard said at the time..
“My biggest concern in my life right now is that I don't know who my boss will be,” Willard added Thursday night.
Willard only left last week about Maryland's athletic director taking the same job at SMU and Maryland's lack of spending.
“This will be a family decision. I love College Park and I love Maryland.” Willard continued. “But at this point in your career, when you're looking at things, I have to consider everything about what you're moving forward.”
Willard said everything that appears to refer to “but” what “but” thinks he already knows about Willard. He headed for Villanova. Otherwise, you'll expect a dedicated coach to shut down these types of rumors.
He was Booing with his own send-off For sweet 16, and he Biased Questions Surrounding His Drama While continuing to add fuel to uncertainty.
Has he done something different about being stuck in the drama last week?
“No. There's nothing.” Willard replied.
