Surgeon Charged in Double Homicide

A surgeon from Chicago faces charges for allegedly killing his ex-wife and her present husband at their Ohio residence, according to police reports. The suspect, Michael David McKee, was apprehended 400 miles away after providing crucial information to investigators.

This tragic event arises nearly nine years post-divorce, with McKee, aged 39, accused of executing this act over a span of nearly five years.

Spencer and Monique Tepe were discovered deceased in their home located in the Wineland Park area of Columbus on December 30. A co-worker had alerted authorities through a 911 call at 9:03 a.m., expressing concern that Spencer had missed work.

The co-worker described him as reliable and noted the unusual absence of communication from both him and his wife. “It’s quite alarming, honestly,” the colleague mentioned.

Subsequent investigations led police to the couple’s bodies, with reports indicating that Spencer Tepe had sustained multiple gunshot wounds, while Monique Tepe suffered at least one to the chest. Their two young children, aged 1 and 4, and their dog were found unharmed in the house.

Interestingly, there was no apparent forced entry into the Tepe home, and no weapons were located on the scene.

McKee was arrested in Rockford, Illinois, where state troopers verified that a car linked to him was tracked down.

Footage from surveillance cameras in proximity to the crime scene captured a person of interest who was seen walking through an alley. Detectives are convinced that this video correlates McKee with a car that was present just before and after the incident.

Records hint that McKee had access to the vehicle before and after the shootings. He is noted to be a vascular surgeon with valid medical licenses in both Illinois and California.

Initially, he faced two counts of murder, but recently, the charges advanced to premeditated aggravated murder, as announced by the Columbus Police Department. The specific reasons for this escalation were not disclosed.

Facing a more serious penalty, McKee now risks a life sentence without the possibility of parole or the death penalty. Premeditated murder is a grave charge, demanding prosecutors to prove intentionality behind the act.

In the case of aggravated murder, it must be established that the crime was committed with prior calculation and premeditation.

Reportedly, McKee waived his right to an extradition hearing, with his public defender now seeking his return to Ohio for a not guilty plea.

The Tepe family expressed relief at the arrest, seeing it as a meaningful step toward justice for Monique and Spencer. In a statement, they emphasized the importance of remembering the lives lost, noting their commitment to caring for the children left behind.

Interestingly, McKee was previously married to Monique Tepe, who was known by her maiden name, Sabaturski, when they tied the knot on August 22, 2015. They divorced in May 2017, with no children resulting from that marriage. Monique and Spencer Tepe later married in December 2020, creating a family they cherished.

Though the investigation continues, the community grapples with the shocking nature of this crime, expressing concern and support for the grieving family.
