Key moments from Ilhan Omar's tumultuous Minneapolis town hall: 'F---ing a--hole'

Ilhan Omar Hosts Town Hall Amid Tensions in Minneapolis

Representative Ilhan Omar of Minnesota held a town hall meeting in her district on Tuesday night, addressing the recent violence involving federal immigration agents and local protesters in Minneapolis.

The event began without incident until an individual sprayed deputies with a foul-smelling chemical. According to officials, some attendees urged Omar to leave, but she chose to stay and continue speaking.

Having been targeted with the spray, Omar expressed defiance, stating, “Don’t let them have a show. We’re going to keep going! These bastards aren’t going to let this go on.”

Upon returning to the microphone, she asserted, “There are realities that people like this ugly man don’t understand. We are strong as the state of Minnesota, and we will be resilient in the face of what they throw at us.”

Much of her speech focused on criticizing federal immigration policy and actions taken by the Trump administration. Notably, she called for either the impeachment or resignation of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem right before the attack occurred.

“Everyone, please calm down. My remarks are over,” she remarked following the incident, adding it’s crucial to continue working with her Democratic colleagues.

Omar also described Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as a “rogue agency” responsible for escalating violence. She stated, “ICE is shooting people in broad daylight, tear gassing peaceful protesters, and removing children from schools. We cannot treat this as business as usual.”

Additionally, she made strong accusations against ICE agents, alleging murder without a statute of limitations, insisting that accountability would be pursued regardless of federal compliance. “It’s clear that the investigation will be conducted transparently,” she emphasized.

Despite her critical remarks about federal authorities, Omar managed to insert a bit of humor. In response to a question about how residents could help the police, she noted, “One of the things ICE has been successful at is getting the people of Minneapolis to like the Minneapolis Police Department.” It seemed like a small moment of levity amidst the seriousness of the discussion.

She called on Republican lawmakers to “grow the backbone” and pass the Congressional War Powers Resolution. Mentioning reports of ICE agents possibly leaving the area, she expressed concerns about compliance with federal immigration detainers, likening the situation to navigating a parking lot.

Omar also drew parallels between the brutal actions of federal immigration authorities and the very conditions that many asylum seekers flee from. She concluded, “What this crackdown has actually done is scared real citizens. Children are afraid to go to school, fearing heavy machine guns. They came to America to escape this trauma.” The town hall meeting wrapped up with a call for compassion and understanding.
