Defense Secretary’s Top Advisor Resigns After Six Months

Justin Fulcher, a senior advisor to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, has stepped down from his position at the Pentagon after six months. The Department of Defense (DOD) confirmed this news recently.

Fulcher officially announced his resignation on Thursday evening, asserting that the choice was entirely his. Initially, he had intended to serve for only six months, aiming to leave on good terms. He spoke highly of the efforts underway at the Pentagon, particularly praising the “great work” being done under Hegseth for the military and the nation.

“The Department of Defense appreciates Justin Fulcher’s contributions on behalf of President Trump and Secretary Hegseth,” said Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell in a statement.

Advisor’s Contributions to the Pentagon

During his time, Fulcher provided guidance on human resources and policy matters. He also indicated that he was involved in various defense initiatives. His work included reviewing significant acquisition programs aimed at enhancing the lethality of U.S. forces and boosting the industrial base. His efforts helped reduce software procurement timelines significantly, taking them from years down to mere months, and he contributed to modernizing essential IT systems across the Pentagon.

He supported Hegseth in key discussions, including high-profile meetings in the Indo-Pacific region and played a role in reallocating nearly $50 billion toward more impactful defense projects.

Fulcher expressed his appreciation for the hard work of Pentagon personnel, mentioning progress in fostering a “warrior spirit” and revitalizing the military, both Hegseth and Trump having acknowledged their leadership. He noted that “this is just the beginning.”

Having served as Hegseth’s senior advisor since April, Fulcher shared his departure in a message posted online, describing his government service as “incredibly inspiring.” He credited Hegseth’s decisive leadership and President Trump’s trust in their team for his accomplishments, adding that he plans to continue advocating for American forces in the future.

Fulcher joined the DOD earlier this year, becoming part of Hegseth’s core team after Hegseth took over at the Pentagon during Trump’s second term.

Staff Changes at the Pentagon

His resignation is part of a broader restructuring of the senior staff in Hegseth’s office. While officials have played down the significance of the change, it’s noteworthy that at least six aides have departed since January.

What Fulcher’s next steps will be remains unclear, although his comments imply he aims to stay engaged in national security matters. As of now, the Pentagon has not announced a successor to his position.
