Key quotes from Trump-Harris first presidential debate

Below are key exchanges between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris during Tuesday night's debate in Philadelphia.

abortion

Trump: “What I've done is I've spent 52 years trying to get Roe v. Wade to the states. And because of the talent and the heart and the strength of six Supreme Court Justices, we got it done.”

Harris: “If Congress passes a bill restoring the protections of Roe v. Wade, I will be proud to sign it into law as president of the United States. … I believe that the American people believe that certain freedoms, the freedom to make decisions about their own bodies, should not be decided by the government.”

2020 Election

Harris: “Donald Trump has been fired by 81 million Americans. Let's be very clear about that. Obviously Trump is having a very hard time accepting that fact, but we cannot have the president of the United States chosen as we have been in the past according to the will of the voters in a free and fair election.”

The war between Israel and Hamas

Trump: “I believe that if she becomes president, Israel will cease to exist within two years. I'm good at making predictions, so I hope I'm wrong on that one.”

Harris: “We have to chart a course for a two-state solution, and that solution must ensure the security of Israelis, Israelis and equally Palestinians.”

Wildcards

TRUMP: In Springfield, [Haitian migrants are] They're eating dogs. These people who come in are eating cats. They're eating people's pets. This is what's going on in our country, and it's unfortunate.

Regarding the assassination attempt

Trump: “I could have taken a bullet in the head because of what they're saying” [me.] They talk about democracy, but I am a threat to democracy. They are the threat to democracy.”

Ukraine

Harris: “If Donald Trump were president, [Russian President Vladimir] Putin will be sitting in Kiev right now… looking to Poland and the rest of Europe, and telling the 800,000 Polish Americans here in Pennsylvania how quickly they would give up what they think is goodwill and friendship. [Putin, who] He is known as a dictator and will eat you for lunch.”

Trump: “President Putin endorsed her last week” [and] “I hope she wins,” he said, and I think he meant it, because it's just incredible what he got away with. It wouldn't have happened to me. Other leaders of other countries [Biden and Harris are] They are weak and incompetent. They are very incompetent.”

Immigration

Trump: “Why are we allowing millions of people to cross our southern border? Why doesn't she do something? … I want her to go to Washington, D.C., during this debate, because we're wasting so much time…” “Get him out of bed, wake him up at 4 p.m., and say, 'Come on, come to the office. Let's sign this bill.' If he signs a bill to close the border, all he has to do is tell the Border Patrol.”

National Security

Harris:[Trump’s] “A former national security adviser has said that Trump is dangerous and unfit to serve. A former secretary of defense has said that the nation, the republic, cannot survive another term of Trump. When I hear this kind of rhetoric, and the issues that affect the American people are not being addressed, I think the choice in the election is clear.”

Trump: “I fired most of those people, but I wasn't very lenient. They did bad things, they did a bad job. I fired them. They didn't fire anybody. They didn't fire anybody that had anything to do with Afghanistan, the Taliban, the 13 people that were brutally and violently murdered. And I got to know their parents, their families, and they didn't fire them. They should have fired the generals, all of the top people, because that was the most incompetent response that anybody's ever seen.”

economy

Trump: “I went to the Wharton School of Finance, and a lot of my professors [economic] This is a great plan. This is a great plan. This is a plan that will enhance our work, our value as a country.

That way, people will want to work, jobs will be created, and a lot of good, solid money will be generated for this country. Finally, she has no plan. She copied Biden's plan, which is four sentences like, 'Run to the spots, run.' Four sentences is just, 'Oh, we're going to work to lower taxes.' She has no plan. Look at her plan. She has no plan.”
