Release of Suspect in Madeleine McCann Case
The main suspect in the 2007 case of missing British toddler, Madeleine McCann, is set to be released from a German prison on Wednesday. He has served a seven-year sentence for a separate sex offense.
In 2020, German prosecutors identified Christian Bruckner as the suspect, linking him to the disappearance of McCann, who went missing in the Algarve region of Portugal. The identification followed Bruckner’s conviction for raping a 72-year-old woman in that same area.
Bruckner’s prison term ends this Wednesday. According to reports from Der Spiegel, his passport has been revoked, and he has been electronically tagged. He must inform authorities of his residence and seek permission to travel.
Lawyer Philip Malcote claims this is a measure to keep Bruckner under investigative detention, allowing prosecutors constant access to him. However, Bruckner’s legal team has consistently denied any link to McCann’s disappearance.
Aside from the rape conviction, Bruckner has a history that includes convictions for child abuse and drug trafficking. Authorities from Britain, Germany, and Portugal, who identified him as the key suspect, are still looking for solid evidence to connect him to the McCann case.
In June, police from Portugal and Germany conducted a four-day search for evidence in the Algarve.
Recently, British police revealed that Bruckner, currently held in a northern German prison, turned down a request for an interview regarding the McCann investigation. They affirmed their commitment to following up on credible leads.
At the time of her disappearance, McCann was just three years old, taken from her bedroom at a resort while her parents were dining nearby.
Bruckner, now 49, resided in the Algarve for a significant period, from 1995 to 2007, during which he was involved in incidents related to hotels and holiday flats, as outlined in court documents.
Meanwhile, McCann’s parents maintain their quest for information about their now 22-year-old daughter, issuing statements annually on the anniversary of her disappearance. They express their enduring love and the profound sense of loss in their messages.
