Richards’ Availability for World Cup Uncertain
FAYETTEVILLE, Ga. — Chris Richards found himself in the Atlanta suburbs on Saturday, but it seems he’ll miss the game against Senegal in Charlotte on Sunday.
There’s a lot of uncertainty surrounding Richards, who is regarded as the best defender for the U.S. national team. He recently sat out Crystal Palace’s last two games due to an ankle injury, as noted by manager Mauricio Pochettino.
“I think he needs to keep up with his rehabilitation,” Pochettino stated. “It’s probably better for him to stay here, to focus on training and planning.” Honestly, it makes you wonder—what’s the plan for next week?
Richards joined the U.S. camp on Friday, arriving late after Palace prepared for the European final in Leipzig, Germany, which took place the following Wednesday. He was on the bench during that match but didn’t play, and as of now, he hasn’t practiced with the national team.
A source recently indicated to the Post that while Pochettino may be optimistic about Richards’ readiness for the World Cup, he doesn’t seem entirely confident.
“I’ve been asking since yesterday when he’d arrive. [Assistant coach] Jesus [Pérez], what do you think? I mean, what do you think? Which formation?” It felt like a countdown. The answer was always, “wait.” It’s just too early to tell. The next few days will be crucial for deciding if he’ll be fit for the World Cup.”
The U.S. has already announced a 26-man squad for the World Cup, but FIFA won’t finalize the list until Monday. Injured players can be replaced up to 24 hours before the first match.
Next weekend’s friendly against Germany will be significant for Richards, as it serves as the final preparation before the U.S. opens the World Cup against Paraguay on June 12.
Richards is, arguably, a linchpin for the U.S. national team. The depth at center back isn’t that great, and he’s basically the most trusted player in that position. If he’s fit, he’s likely to play a key role in the tournament.
If Richards can’t go, there are alternatives. Vancouver Whitecaps’ Tristan Blackmon and Walker Zimmerman from Toronto FC are among those who could step in.
Then there’s also the option of moving Alex Freeman inside to play as a center back, and Joe Scully could potentially do the same.
