A “beloved” high school basketball coach and teacher was found dead in a storm drain near the school’s gymnasium, police said.

Dexter Butler, 38, was found in a storm drain near the school’s gymnasium on Saturday, March 2, according to the Florida Keys Police Department and the Monroe County School District.

The Monroe County School District said in a statement that his death was a “tragic accident” that rocked the close-knit community.

“The Monroe County School District regrets to announce that beloved teacher and coach Dexter Butler passed away in a tragic accident on Saturday,” the Florida school district said in a statement. “We extend our deepest condolences to his family and all the students who knew and worked with him.”

The Key West Police Department confirmed to FOX News Digital that the father of two died after falling into a storm drain near the school’s gymnasium.

Police said the man fell into a storm drain and drowned.

Authorities said they were dispatched Saturday morning to reports of a body found in a storm drain near the school’s gymnasium.

Police said no foul play was suspected in this unfortunate accident.

Students and teachers remembered Butler’s legacy Monday by creating a monument to the beloved educator.

“Today, our school community came together to mourn the loss of Dexter Butler, a beloved family member,” the district said in a statement. “Students came together with heavy hearts and laid out flowers and left cards and notes of support for each other and Mr. Butler’s family during this difficult time.”

Monroe County Schools announced Monday that counselors have been placed at both Key West High School and Horace O’Bryant Middle School to help students and staff process the loss.
