After finishing up at the gym, Dan Markel headed home, thinking it would be just another routine day. Little did he know, danger lurked nearby. As he pulled into his driveway, the respected law professor at Florida State University was on the phone with music teacher Stewart Schlazer, discussing educational options for his children—when everything changed in an instant.
“Can you hold on a moment? There’s someone I don’t recognize in my driveway,” Markel told Schlazer, a statement that quickly became chilling.
Just moments later, Schlazer heard a loud bang from Markel’s end of the line.
“The final hours have a haunting aspect,” said producer Lily Fletcher, reflecting on the CCTV footage that showed a seemingly ordinary day. “Dan had dropped the kids off at school and gone to the gym. Yet, there’s a Prius just circling the parking lot, as if it’s waiting for something.”
Fletcher described the scene, comparing the unsettling feeling to a predator lying in wait. It’s unsettling because it all took place during what should have been a normal part of Markel’s daily routine.
On July 18, 2014, Markel was shot in the head while sitting in his car in his Tallahassee garage. He was 41 years old and succumbed to his injuries the following day.
This case has gained renewed attention thanks to the true crime docuseries “Welcome to the Family: The Murder of Dan Markel,” available for streaming on Hulu.
The docuseries includes interviews and taped conversations, notably with FBI agent Pat Sanford and Rob Adelson, who testified against his mother, Donna Adelson, during her trial. The narrative largely tracks the prosecution’s investigation and evidence while also showcasing court testimonies.
Prosecutors painted a picture of Dee Adelson, Donna’s mother, as a controlling figure who disapproved of Dan and sought to break up his marriage to her daughter Wendi, ultimately leading to a bitter custody battle over their two children. This custody struggle, they argued, was a driving force behind the murder-for-hire scheme.
Prosecutors further alleged that Charlie Adelson, Wendi’s brother, played a crucial role in orchestrating the murder through his then-girlfriend, Katherine Magbanua, who connected him with Sigfredo Garcia, the shooter, and his friend Luis Rivera.
Markel had a complicated marriage with Wendi, marrying in 2006 after meeting online. Their marriage faltered after two sons were born. Their contentious divorce in 2013 led to a fierce custody battle, with Wendi wanting to move the kids to south Florida and Dan wanting to stay in Tallahassee.
After the relocation request was denied, Donna’s anger reportedly intensified.
In court, prosecutors suggested that the custody dispute motivated Donna to facilitate Markel’s murder as he blocked her daughter and grandchildren’s relocation.
During the unsolved case that unraveled over time, investigators embarked on a meticulous investigation, using cellphone records, video surveillance, financial documents, and recordings to piece together the crime.
In 2023, Charlie was convicted of first-degree murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and solicitation for his brother-in-law’s death. He claimed shock when Magbanua revealed that the killers were her associates. Charlie faced significant financial threats tied to his involvement.
Both Garcia and Magbanua were convicted of first-degree murder. Rivera took a plea deal, admitting to second-degree murder and cooperating with authorities.
As the legal proceedings continued, both Donna and her relatives were followed closely and subjected to surveillance, revealing a family dynamic complicated by interference and manipulation. The conversations recorded revealed a family too used to getting their way, leaving some to wonder if they thought they could evade justice.
Wendi has consistently denied any involvement and hasn’t faced charges related to Markel’s murder.
In light of all this, Fletcher expressed her concern over the certainty many display online regarding Wendi’s involvement. Based on the recorded conversations, she speculated it was possible Wendi knew nothing about the plot, highlighting the dysfunctional nature of her family’s meddling.
“This matter went out of control—tragically, no one gets what they desire,” Fletcher summarized, encapsulating the complexity of the situation involving custody battles, familial pressures, and ultimately, murder.
