Kilmar Abrego Garcia Requests Asylum in the U.S., Citing Fear of Torture in Uganda

Asylum Plans for Kilmer Abrego Garcia Amid Legal Troubles

Kilmer Abrego Garcia, an undocumented immigrant, is reportedly planning to seek asylum in the United States, despite his connections to MS-13 gang members who face human smuggling charges.

Currently, Abrego Garcia is in the custody of Virginia Immigration Customs Enforcement (ICE) after a federal judge approved his release from prison prior to a trial related to human smuggling.

This week, Judge Paula Sinis, appointed by former President Obama to the U.S. District Court in Maryland, has issued a temporary block against ICE agents from deporting Abrego Garcia.

Now, his attorney indicates that Abrego Garcia is pursuing asylum, expressing concerns about being deported to Uganda, as stated in a report.

Kilmer Abrego Garcia emphasized his desire to seek asylum in the U.S. during a court hearing on Wednesday.

Legal representatives for citizens from El Salvador are working to challenge ongoing deportation efforts in the courts. Abrego Garcia has the right to voice his fears of persecution and torture in Uganda. He also mentioned to immigration officials that he would prefer to go to Costa Rica if deportation were necessary.

Earlier this year, Abrego Garcia was deported to El Salvador after federal authorities identified him as a member of MS-13, a claim he has denied.

Subsequent to his deportation, Democratic lawmakers from both the House and Senate visited El Salvador to meet him and advocated for his release. He was brought back to the United States a few months ago after facing human smuggling charges across several states.

Federal prosecutors have accused him of collaborating with a convicted felon.
