Kim Jong-un Refers to North Korea as 'the Most Powerful Army in the World' While Commending Ukrainian Forces

North Korea Shows Support for Russia Amid Ongoing Conflict in Ukraine

On Thursday, North Korean state media reported that Kim Jong-un held a significant event aimed at bolstering support for Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. This gathering was intended to provide “warm and radical encouragement” to the North Korean military involved in the conflict, as well as to honor the commanders leading these troops. The message seemed to express a belief in the potential for success on the battlefield.

The South Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) also noted a positive exchange between Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and his North Korean counterpart, Cho Song Hui. This interaction serves as a reminder that ongoing peace talks could further solidify the relationship between Pyongyang and Moscow as they seek to address the situation in Ukraine.

Looking back, it’s interesting to note that North Korea signed a Mutual Defense Agreement with Russia in June 2024, coinciding with Russian President Vladimir Putin’s first visit to the nation in two decades. Subsequent to this agreement, Ukraine started sharing initial evidence of a notable North Korean presence amid the conflict, claiming that Kim’s regime dispatched troops as early as April, stating they only operate in the Kursk region, which remains a less contested area.

While the exact number of North Korean forces deployed in Ukraine is unclear, South Korean intelligence reports from last year suggest that up to 15,000 troops may be engaged in the conflict, with reports indicating that roughly 600 had been lost. It’s a staggering thought, and yet, it feels almost abstract to discuss such numbers when real lives are at stake.

Kim’s recent decision to spotlight the leaders of military operations comes on the heels of a much-anticipated meeting between President Putin and former U.S. President Donald Trump. The aim of that meeting appeared to be reaching a consensus on how to resolve the ongoing invasion. Following the talks, Trump met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky alongside European leaders to lay out steps toward a long-lasting peace.

Interestingly, the North Korean newspaper, Rodong Shin-moon, did not cover the Trump-Putin summit or the subsequent meetings in Washington. Instead, it emphasized the commemoration of military commanders and their bravery, as well as Kim’s admiration for them. The event served partly as a ceremony to honor those involved in the conflict with Ukraine.

“After receiving a detailed briefing from the commander about military operations overseas,” Kim reportedly acknowledged the achievements of troops engaged in the Kursk operation. He stated, “We are a heroic army, composed of individuals nurtured by our proud people.” It’s a somewhat grandiose perspective, emphasizing their military strength and role.

Importantly, Kim had previously honored his soldiers involved in the Ukrainian conflict in July, a more subdued affair focusing on commemorating the fallen. State media even released images of him visibly emotional during the event.

The Ukrainian government first confirmed the presence of North Korean troops on the battlefield back in January when Zelensky presented video evidence of a North Korean soldier, acknowledging the support the South Korean government has provided to Ukraine’s defense efforts.

Over the past decade, Putin has made considerable efforts to strengthen ties with Pyongyang, peaking with his recent visit. This move could be seen as a shift in alliances, as Russia appears to be positioning itself as a key partner for North Korea, possibly overshadowing China’s historical influence.

Additionally, during a recent update, Kim informed Putin about the preparations for their anticipated meeting. He recalled his three encounters with Trump during the latter’s presidency, which included a noteworthy moment at the Chinese border, marking a historic visit. Putin reportedly expressed gratitude for North Korea’s support and acknowledged the courage of its armed forces.

In short, the dynamics between these nations seem ever-evolving, filled with complex relationships and implications for the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
