AUSTIN, Texas — Kimi Antonelli Emerges Victorious in the United States Grand Prix

Kimi Antonelli has clinched victory at the United States Grand Prix held at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin. However, despite this impressive win, he was unable to secure his first Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship, as his title celebrations will be postponed until at least the following week in Mexico City.

Heading into the race on Sunday, Antonelli needed not only a win but also specific outcomes from fellow competitors. He required Lewis Hamilton to finish fifth or lower and his teammate George Russell to place ninth or lower to wrap up the championship. Unfortunately, those results didn’t pan out as he had hoped.

Still, it appears that the celebrations might just be around the corner at the upcoming Mexico City Grand Prix next weekend.

On Saturday, the talented driver from Mercedes placed himself in a prime position for success, grabbing pole position with an impressive lap in Q3 while his closest rivals started farther back. Throughout the initial stages of the race on Sunday, Antonelli set a strong pace on medium tires, leaving those behind him on softer compounds struggling to keep pace.

He made a pit stop on Lap 24 to switch to hard tires, emerging behind a few cars but methodically working his way up to P3, trailing only behind Max Verstappen and Charles Leclerc. After Verstappen pitted for another set of tires on Lap 31, Antonelli found himself in second place and quickly reclaimed the lead from the Ferrari driver, extending his advantage.

By Lap 40, the potential for Antonelli to secure the championship was visible when Hamilton pitted from P4 and rejoined in P6, which was a favorable outcome for Antonelli. Meanwhile, Russell was running in P8 but faced a setback with a five-second penalty earlier in the race for gaining an advantage after leaving the track.

Yet, Hamilton wasn’t deterred. On his new hard tires, he rapidly closed in on Isack Hadjar in P5, and by Lap 41, he overtook Hadjar at Turn 1, taking that much-needed position.

Up ahead, Leclerc was also pursuing Verstappen, reducing his lead to less than two seconds by Lap 45. Behind them, Russell maintained a secure position in P8, while the chances for Oscar Piastri seemed to fade as the race progressed.

As the final ten laps approached, the focus shifted from Antonelli’s title chase to the battle for positions between Lando Norris in second, Verstappen, and Leclerc, who were all vying for supremacy. Norris, on older hard tires, was attempting a one-stop strategy but lost his second position to Verstappen by Lap 47, shortly before Leclerc passed him as well.

While Antonelli stretched his lead to 16 seconds ahead of Leclerc with just five laps remaining, Hamilton also managed to slide past Norris on Lap 51, moving him up to P4 and complicating Antonelli’s championship aspirations further.

Then, some unexpected drama unfolded when Valtteri Bottas experienced engine issues and stopped on the track, triggering a Virtual Safety Car on Lap 52. While marshals struggled to clear his vehicle, a crane was eventually called in to assist.

Once the VSC ended on Lap 53, Antonelli maintained a 19-second lead, with Leclerc and Verstappen in a close battle for P2. The most action-packed contest was between Alexander Albon and Carlos Sainz, as they traded places just a half-second apart.

Ultimately, Antonelli crossed the finish line first, achieving his ninth Grand Prix victory of the season and adding 25 points to his total, bringing him to 365 points for the year. Russell’s P8 finish allows him to keep his championship ambitions alive with 242 points, while Hamilton’s P4 result puts him at 241 points, just shy of Russell’s total as they head towards Mexico City.
