King Charles III and Queen Camilla Commemorate 9/11 Victims on U.S. Tour
King Charles III and Queen Camilla marked the second phase of their U.S. tour with a visit to the September 11 Memorial in New York City on April 29, 2026.
Joined by New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani and former Mayor Michael Bloomberg, the royal couple participated in a wreath-laying ceremony, extending their condolences to the victims of the 2001 attacks.
This visit to the memorial was a key part of their agenda, coinciding with the celebrations for the 250th anniversary of American independence.
In a historic moment, King Charles III and Queen Camilla became the first British monarchs to visit Ground Zero, leaving behind a bouquet of roses along with a handwritten note on the memorial’s bronze railing.
The royal couple arrived in a motorcade, escorted by Bloomberg, and proceeded to the memorial pool, where they silently honored those who lost their lives in the tragic event.
After laying down the flowers, they met with first responders and victims’ families, alongside local leaders such as Mayor Mamdani, Governor Kathy Hochul, and Governor Mikie Sherrill.
Since the royals’ arrival on Monday, security across New York City has been heightened significantly, causing road closures and traffic delays, as confirmed by the New York City Police Department.
This increase in security comes in the wake of a recent shooting incident at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, involving a man who attempted to assassinate President Trump.
Looking ahead, Queen Camilla plans to visit the New York Public Library to donate a Lou doll to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Winnie the Pooh, a beloved character for many children.
Meanwhile, King Charles will engage with an urban agriculture initiative aimed at assisting youths facing food insecurity, followed by meetings with influential business leaders in Manhattan.
The couple’s busy schedule kicked off earlier in the week with tea at the White House, hosted by President Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
On Tuesday, King Charles held a private meeting with President Trump in the Oval Office and delivered a landmark address to a joint session of Congress, becoming the first British monarch to do so since Queen Elizabeth II in 1991. The day concluded with a state dinner honor hosted by the Trumps.
During his speech at the dinner, King Charles emphasized the importance of the NATO alliance and highlighted the strategic AUKUS submarine agreement. President Trump reiterated his commitment to preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons.
The King ended his address with a toast to the strong partnership between the U.S. and the U.K., celebrating their shared history and future collaboration.
According to reports, the royal couple is also scheduled to visit Virginia before returning to the White House for a formal send-off from the president, wrapping up their official U.S. tour.
