King Charles III Set for Historic Visit to Washington
Next month, King Charles III of the United Kingdom will make his inaugural state visit to Washington since becoming king.
During his trip, which is set for the last week of April, he is expected to address Parliament, though the exact date and time are still unconfirmed.
This visit marks a significant moment as it will be the first time a British monarch has spoken to Congress since 1991. That year, Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles’ mother, became the first British royal to address U.S. lawmakers.
Interestingly, this visit comes amidst some political tension. President Trump and King Charles had previously expressed their concerns regarding British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s stance on the Iran conflict, mentioning the increasing pressures surrounding it.
Back in September, President Trump had a state dinner hosted by Prince Charles at Windsor Castle during his visit to London.
In a recent address, Speaker of the House of Commons Mike Johnson paid tribute to the special relationship between the United States and the United Kingdom, in light of the U.S.’ 250th anniversary.
King Charles’ upcoming visit coincides with the Trump administration’s urging for Prime Minister Starmer to lend support towards the ongoing conflict involving Iran, the U.S., and Israel.
Starmer, on the other hand, seems to be steering clear of direct involvement in this conflict. Recently, he stated that his priority is to focus on what truly benefits Britain’s interests. His remarks followed some pointed criticisms from President Trump, who questioned his leadership by remarking that Starmer is “no Winston Churchill.”
While the political scene is certainly complex, it’s clear that King Charles’ visit will bring a notable dynamic to U.S.-UK relations as both countries navigate their respective positions throughout these unfolding events.
