LONDON – King Charles III Meets Prince Harry
King Charles III recently had a reunion with Prince Harry, marking a significant moment for the family as they attempt to repair their relationship, which has been strained since Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties and relocated to the U.S. six years ago.
On Friday, Buckingham Palace verified that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, along with their two children, Archie and Lilibet, met with the King and Queen Camilla at Highgrove House, located to the west of London.
Harry flew back to the UK on Monday for several charitable events, but much of the attention focused on whether he would meet his father during this trip.
There was a lot of buzz in British tabloids regarding the possibility of Meghan joining him and, more crucially, whether she would bring their children to finally introduce them to their grandfather, Charles.
However, monarchs usually plan their schedules well in advance, making such opportunities fleeting, particularly with kids needing to head back to school in the fall.
The desire to reconnect added a layer of tension to the situation, which became evident when royal officials invited Harry to Buckingham Palace but later retracted the offer due to his delayed response. Coupled with this, Harry’s recent legal defeat against a British tabloid further complicated matters as he faced challenges regarding privacy claims.
This legal battle has strained his connections with his family. Harry, who wishes to heal the rift with his 77-year-old father, is aware that Charles is currently undergoing treatment for an undisclosed cancer.
During a brief visit to London last September, Harry and Charles had a short meeting over tea, but this marks their first substantial reunion in over a year.
Harry is also eager for his children to bond with the monarchy; their first meeting with Charles was at the late Queen Elizabeth II’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations in 2022.
Now, at ages 7 and 5, Archie and Lilibet can remember their grandfather, and it’s likely they’re looking forward to some photos together, although this gathering is private, and pictures won’t be shared publicly.
Tensions within the royal family have only escalated since Harry and Meghan’s departure from royal life to pursue media opportunities and escape the pressures associated with their roles. Harry’s memoir, which included scathing criticisms of the royal family and explosive claims about their connection with the media, marked a particularly low point.
The memoir details accusations of the royal family leaking information about other family members in exchange for favorable media coverage, a situation that Harry described in stark terms. His remarks about Camilla’s actions, particularly regarding her efforts to improve her image post-affair with Charles, were notably harsh.
After a legal battle over security concerns fell through last year, Harry expressed a desire to rebuild family relations, even suggesting that the royal family might be withholding police protection as a form of retaliation for his decision to step away from royal obligations.
In an interview, he stated, “I want to make peace with my family. There is no point in continuing to fight,” emphasizing uncertainty about how much longer his father might be around.
Friday’s meeting represents a potential turning point in their efforts to mend their relationship.
