Georgia football coach Kirby Smart was asked about the team’s recent spate of driving-related arrests and charges.
Early last year, offensive lineman Devin Willock and a team office worker were killed in a car accident during a race. According to the Athens Banner-HeraldSince then, there have been 25 arrests and charges for speeding, racing and reckless driving linked to the program.
Smart was asked about the entire incident at SEC media day on Tuesday.
“The incident that occurred off the field is something that we do not condone,” Smart told the Banner-Herald. “It’s very disappointing, and I think disappointing is the right word. I always talk about the process and the outcome, and I’ve said about wins and losses, trying not to judge things based on the outcome of a win or loss. In this situation, the outcome is very disappointing.”
In March, running back Trevor Etienne was arrested for DUI, but the charges were ultimately dropped after he pleaded no contest to failure to maintain lane and reckless driving.
Then last week, Smael Mondon Jr. and Beau Furey were arrested on separate driving offences.
DeMello Jones was also charged with reckless driving.

Backup safety David Daniel Sisavant, who was arrested for reckless driving after leading a police pursuit in February, was released by the team for violating team rules.
“There will be some guys that get suspended for those things,” Smart said. “What everybody wants to know is, for what games will they be suspended? It’s probably significant in terms of discipline and the culture that players experience. As far as I know, we’ve done more. There’s no team in the country that’s ever suspended a player for a traffic violation.”
“That’s why Marcus Rosemy was suspended (last year).”
