Kirk Cousins May Get Another Opportunity

Kirk Cousins might have a chance to step in again. The Falcons’ starting quarterback, Michael Penix Jr., is uncertain for Sunday’s game against the Dolphins, which could allow Cousins to make his first start in Atlanta since last season.

Penix, who is 25, took over as the Falcons’ starter after Cousins in Week 16 last year. Unfortunately, he injured his knee during the last moments of Atlanta’s recent 20-10 defeat to the 49ers.

“He’s the ultimate tough guy,” said Falcons head coach Raheem Morris on Friday, addressing Penix’s condition. “It’s going to depend on his mobility and whether he can go. We won’t put him at risk.” He added, “Practicing him live will give us a better feel for his readiness over the next few days.”

Even though Penix is listed as questionable, he expressed confidence about his ability to play, stating, “Yes, that’s the plan.”

If Penix is unable to go this week, Morris is sure about utilizing Cousins. “I’m really confident in our backups,” he remarked.

Cousins, now 37, has only participated in one game with Atlanta this season but has been putting in considerable practice time to prepare for Sunday’s matchup. “Kirk got a lot of reps this week,” Morris noted, although he couldn’t specify exactly how many.

After signing a four-year, $180 million contract with the Falcons before the last season, Cousins had previously mentioned to Atlanta’s owner, Arthur Blank, that he was interested in being traded to a team where he could start.

It’s interesting how things can change, right? Atlanta has kept him on the roster alongside their offensive coordinator, which might suggest they still see value in his experience. This week, there have been some positive comments about Cousins’ performance during practice.

“He’s throwing the ball well. He’s moving well,” said Zach Robinson, highlighting Cousins’ readiness. “If we have to go in that direction, everyone will feel great having Kirk there.”
