Kirk Herbstreit Weighs In on Jets’ Quarterback Dilemma

Kirk Herbstreit, the ESPN college football analyst and commentator for Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football,” has shared his insights on the New York Jets’ quarterback situation following their 27-14 defeat to the Patriots.

With Justin Fields in his final year of contract, Tyrod Taylor set to become a free agent, and no clear long-term successor in sight, the Jets face significant decisions moving forward.

“So, what’s the plan at quarterback?” Herbstreit posed. “Justin Fields is under contract through next year, but will he hit free agency? Will he enter the draft? What’s the hold-up?”

He pointed out that this year’s college quarterback crop isn’t particularly standout, suggesting that the 2027 draft could offer better options. “It’s not a great year for quarterbacks, so why not consider a temporary solution, like Kirk Cousins in ‘26, while using draft picks to strengthen other areas?” he suggested. “Then, in ‘27, you could aim for a real game-changer. I mean, people are talking a lot about Arch Manning. He was supposed to be the top guy. Maybe he’ll declare this year, but then again, he hasn’t announced anything yet. Most likely, he’ll return for another year of college. If that’s the case, maybe the Jets could wait for him in ’27.”

The quarterback question has been a constant headache for the Jets, especially since they’ve struggled to develop talent at that position. Former first-round picks like Sam Darnold, who was drafted in 2018, and Zach Wilson, chosen in 2021, fell short of expectations and were eventually moved on. Interestingly, Darnold seems to be finding success now, playing well for both Minnesota and Seattle.

In the recent game against the Patriots, Fields managed only 116 passing yards while also rushing for 67 yards, contributing one touchdown pass and another on the ground.
