White House Requests Additional Security Funding Following Assassination
The White House is asking Congress for more security funding for both itself and the judicial department in light of the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, according to Fox News Digital.
Specifically, the request includes an additional $58 million in security funds. A spokesperson confirmed this to Fox News Digital on Monday, stating that the extra funding will be integrated into the ongoing resolution process. This temporary spending bill must pass by the end of the month to prevent a government shutdown when current funds expire on September 30.
Punchbowl News was the first to report on the security funding request, although further details were not available immediately. The White House has not yet responded to inquiries from Fox News Digital.
Kirk, who was 31, was fatally shot in the neck during a stop on his U.S. comeback tour at Utah Valley University. This tragedy follows a year marked by two attempted assassinations of former President Donald Trump.
In July 2024, a 20-year-old gunman named Thomas Matthew Crooks fired at Trump from a rooftop during a campaign rally, narrowly missing and injuring Trump while also killing a 50-year-old firefighter who was attending the event.
Another individual, Ryan Rouse, was arrested in September 2024 for attempting to assassinate Trump at his golf club in Florida.
Additionally, Nicholas John Rosuke pleaded guilty to an attempt on Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in June 2022.
The Secret Service, responding to these heightened threats, is reportedly operating at a heightened level of security. Former agents note that the agency must now adapt to unprecedented risks. One former agent commented on the intense pressure the agency is under, stating, “They don’t have time. This threat is now. Can you imagine? They’ve already shot the president once.”
Following Kirk’s assassination, there are plans for increased surveillance and security measures. Former acting director of the Secret Service mentioned the introduction of advanced drone usage for counter-surveillance purposes in reports to lawmakers.
The Secret Service has expressed condolences to the Kirk family but has not disclosed specific changes to Trump’s security protocols post-assassination. A spokesperson mentioned, “Parent safety and security are top priority for the US Secret Service. President Trump receives the highest level of protection, and adjustments will be made as necessary to address evolving threats. Due to operational security, details of these methods remain confidential.”
