Kiyan Anthony: Following in His Father’s Footsteps
Kiyan Anthony has been a standout basketball prospect for years, and, perhaps unsurprisingly, his lineage has heightened expectations. His father, Carmelo Anthony, is a Hall of Famer and 10-time All-Star, celebrated for his scoring prowess in basketball.
Like his dad, Kiyan is currently playing college basketball at Syracuse, where Carmelo also had a significant impact. With Carmelo’s professional career behind him, he’s now able to support Kiyan more intensively off the court.
“I wouldn’t say we’re closer just because he’s not playing anymore,” Kiyan shared. “It’s more about spending time off the court while he focuses on his craft. Our bond has always been strong, but it feels like it’s evolving.” This connection is particularly evident as they engage in projects together, including a Father’s Day episode filmed with Meta.
“It’s a great opportunity to showcase our personalities and how our relationship goes beyond just basketball,” Kiyan added. He’s aware that much of the public sees his father as a side figure during his games, but he wants to highlight their deeper relationship.
Kiyan acknowledges there’s pressure to live up to the legacy associated with his name. However, he emphasizes that his aspirations, especially regarding the NBA, are his own. “I think it’s a lot of external expectations, but I’m the one who has to fulfill my dreams,” he said.
Reflecting on his early days, Kiyan mentioned how initially he wasn’t the best player, and doubts would arise. “It’s funny, people judged me based on my father’s performance, which I think is a bit unfair,” he noted. Nevertheless, as he improved, more supporters came to his side. He recognizes that opinions on social media can be harsh but remains focused on his goals.
He also stated that his father never pressured him into basketball. “He did what he had to do, allowing me to choose my path,” Kiyan explained. Now he’s chasing his dream, aiming to make a mark like his father did. As Kiyan steps onto the court for Syracuse, he aims to restore some of the glory associated with his father’s championship win in 2003.
“Winning games, making it to tournaments, that’s my goal. Bringing the fan base back and promoting Syracuse is important too,” he concluded. While filled with aspirations, it’s clear for Kiyan that here, every play counts.
