Klay Thompson gives revealing answer about decision to sign with Mavericks

Klay Thompson doesn’t want to play the What-if game at the end of the Mavericks season.

Thompson was asked about his decision to join Dallas to end the season with the Grizzlies at FedEx Forum on Friday after the Mavericks lost a 120-106 play-in game.

In a heated response, Thompson said he thought the question was “silly.”

“You can’t do that to me. That’s a bit of a ridiculous question,” he said. “I don’t own a time machine and I don’t believe in looking back. If I hadn’t had my entire career, I wouldn’t be where I was.

“I’m here in Dallas. I’m enjoying my time. I’m looking forward to the future.”

When Thompson signed with the Mavericks in the offseason, he was hoping to win the year with Luka Donsic and Kyrie Irving, who ran in the NBA Finals last year.

In his decision to move from the Warriors to Dallas, Thompson also turned down more money from the Lakers, the third seed in the postseason West.

However, the opposition to what Thompson had envisioned came.

Donsic was traded by the Lakers for a dramatic one-night blockbuster as Anthony Davis was brought to Dallas.

The trade shocked the league, and Dallas’ fanbase was not pleased at all, leading to protests and demand for ticket refunds both inside and outside the American Airlines Center.

Shortly after the blockbuster swap, Irving suffered from season-ending ACL tears, which immediately led the Mavericks season to more questions.

This season, Thompson has all the ups and downs Dallas had all the ups and downs, averaging 14 points per game on 41% shooting in 72 contests.

He also tallied 18 points on Friday in Dallas’s 32-minute elimination game against Memphis.
