Klay Thompson’s New Chapter and Online Banter
The Miami Heat officially announced the signing of the iconic guard Klay Thompson on Monday. Yet, Thompson appears to be preoccupied with discussions regarding his legacy with the Golden State Warriors, engaging with fans in the process.
This past weekend, a snippet from the “Swishlist Podcast” was shared on Instagram, where host opinions clashed over who had the superior career between Thompson and Ray Allen.
A user chimed in, claiming, “Klay has never been a first option. Ray was a top 10 player his first 10 years.” Thompson didn’t take this lightly, responding, “You do realize I was the 2nd leading scorer on two championship teams without KD? You want me to go to a bad team and put up empty stats, that’s easy buddy.” His retort suggested he wasn’t just a supporting player, despite what some might think.
Thompson followed up with another comment, adding, “Holy s*** I led the 2016 playoffs in points scored you casuals 😂.” This seemed to emphasize his point that his playoff achievements were not solely due to defenses focusing on Steph Curry and Kevin Durant. At that time, Durant was with the Oklahoma City Thunder, making his argument seem particularly strong.
However, it’s a bit puzzling why Thompson brought up the idea of joining a “bad team” and accumulating “empty stats.” It didn’t seem to fit the ongoing debate. He isn’t putting down the Warriors, either in their current state or as championship-caliber teams from earlier years.
It’s quite rare for Thompson to engage with fans online like this, especially now as he joins the Heat—making his interactions all the more fascinating.
