Klay Thompson Considers Return to Golden State Warriors
Klay Thompson recently shared his thoughts on possibly reuniting with the Golden State Warriors as he approaches the end of his career. This came to light during an autograph session at Fanatics Fest over the weekend, where he expressed interest in returning to the Bay Area.
A fan posted a video on Instagram asking Thompson if he’d consider a return. Thompson replied, “Listen, I don’t know. It’s a one-year deal. I’d rather finish it out in Golden State.”
Later, another video showed a fan encouraging him to come back, to which Thompson responded, “Never say never.” This definitely sparked some curiosity about his future.
According to NBA insider Marc Stein, the Dallas Mavericks are contemplating options regarding Thompson, suggesting a potential trade or buyout. He still has one year left on his three-year, $50 million contract, which wraps up in 2024. There’s also buzz that the Miami Heat might be interested in acquiring him to play alongside stars like Giannis Antetokounmpo and Bam Adebayo.
It seems Thompson is open to the idea of returning to the Warriors, yet it’s unclear if the team feels the same way. He’s set to turn 37 next season and is nearing his career’s end.
Thompson played for the Warriors from 2011 to 2024, forming a legendary duo known as the “Splash Brothers” with Stephen Curry, and they achieved four NBA championships together. He’s revered as one of the best three-point shooters in NBA history, even earning five All-Star selections throughout his career.
His journey hasn’t been without challenges. In Game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, he suffered a significant injury, tearing his left ACL, which kept him out for the remainder of that series and the following season. Unfortunately, while recovering, he tore his right Achilles tendon during a pickup game in November 2020. After making a comeback in 2021, he found himself in a backup role.
Looking ahead, the Warriors are seen as frontrunners to make a significant offseason move to acquire LeBron James. They also secured center Kristaps Porzingis with a two-year, $40 million contract extension.
