Klein Cain High School TB Cases Prompt Health Response
HOUSTON — Two siblings from Klein Cain High School have tested positive for active tuberculosis, leading Harris County Public Health officials to begin contact tracing efforts. Klein Independent School District (ISD) is also informing families and staff who might be affected.
After being notified about the cases, the school district reached out to a specific group of students and staff who were likely in close contact with one of the infected individuals. In addition, general notifications were issued to all families and staff associated with Klein Cain.
The students are currently receiving medical care and are not attending school. They won’t be allowed back until they get the green light from a healthcare professional or Harris County Public Health, in line with state health guidelines.
Experts mention that tuberculosis isn’t typically spread through casual encounters, like passing someone in a hallway. It generally requires extended, close contact in a confined space. Harris County Public Health is actively tracing contacts to determine who might have been exposed.
“TB is treatable and curable with medication,” the district highlighted in communications sent to families.
Klein Cain High School specifically reached out to students and educators who had shared classes with the infected individuals during a time when they could have been contagious. Families who haven’t been contacted are not considered close contacts, though they may still receive communication if they are identified later through contact tracing.
Due to privacy regulations, the district emphasized that it cannot release any details that could identify the affected students. School officials have asked the community to respect the privacy of the students and their families.
Parents who have questions about possible exposure can reach out to their child’s healthcare provider, check the Harris County Public Health Tuberculosis Information site, or contact the county’s TB Program at (832) 927-7575 during business hours or via email.
