Klobuchar Battled a Blizzard to Acknowledge Somalis

Sen. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN) is reportedly contemplating a run for Minnesota’s governorship. She famously commended the state’s Somali community during her presidential campaign announcement in 2020.

During a snowstorm gathering in February 2019, she remarked that one of the key challenges to progress is to put an end to “fear mongering” and “hate.” She emphasized that people, despite their differences in backgrounds, beliefs, and appearances, share the same country and aspirations.

“Minnesota has the largest Somali population in the U.S., and we take pride in that community,” Klobuchar stated. She recounted a story from a time of heightened tensions, where a Somali-American family dined out. A man confronted them, telling them to “go home.” A little girl then looked at her mother, saying, “Mom, I don’t want to go home. You said we could eat out tonight.”

Shortly after Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz (D) announced he was stepping back from the 2026 gubernatorial race, clips of Klobuchar’s speech about the Somali community gained traction on social media.

Walz’s decision followed a report from citizen journalist Nick Shirley, who shared a video showcasing childcare centers in Minnesota that reportedly received substantial federal funding, yet appeared to be devoid of children.

One of the centers Shirley visited, the Quality Learning Center, had a misspelling on its sign, writing “Learning” instead of “Learning.”

John Nolte from Breitbart News highlighted concerns about alleged fraud, stating that some individuals within the Somali community have defrauded American taxpayers of billions through various scams that involve federal subsidies for programs like food assistance, healthcare, and childcare.
