Pacers Tribute to Reggie Miller Amid Dramatic Win Over Knicks
On Wednesday night, the Indiana Pacers honored Reggie Miller, a franchise legend, although perhaps not in the manner you’d expect. The New York Knicks, despite holding a significant lead, ultimately fell to the Pacers in a thrilling Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals, 138-135.
The Knicks were ahead by 17 points with just over six minutes left, and by 14 with under three to go, but the Pacers rallied impressively to take the game to overtime.
Aaron Nesmith really channeled Miller’s spirit by sinking six straight three-pointers, which helped Indiana close the gap to just two points with only 22.1 seconds remaining. After the Knicks made a pair at the free-throw line, Tyrese Halliburton attempted a buzzer-beater. In a moment reminiscent of Miller’s infamous choke gesture, Halliburton celebrated, only to realize his foot was on the line, meaning his shot tied the game instead of winning it.
When overtime began, New York had a slight edge, but the Pacers quickly staged a comeback, trading leads in an intense back-and-forth. The Knicks missed several crucial shots, ultimately handing the victory to the Pacers.
This win is notable for Indiana, especially considering their historical struggles: before this game, they hadn’t won a playoff match after being down by nine points or more in the final minute since 1998. In fact, their record when leading by seven or more points in late-game situations was previously dismal.
Halliburton and Nesmith were standout performers, scoring 31 and 30 points respectively, while Jalen Brunson led the Knicks with 43 points. The matchup harkened back to previous playoffs where these teams faced each other, and the tension felt almost palpable, particularly as this was a rematch from last year’s second round.
Both teams have faced off numerous times in classic playoff battles during the ’90s, with each New York win propelling them to the NBA Finals. As the rivalry heats up, game two is set for Friday night at Madison Square Garden. The Knicks will surely look to avenge this loss, particularly mindful of Miller’s legacy as they strive for redemption.
