Knicks’ Jalen Brunson nearly brought to tears after first All-Star selection, ‘MVP’ chants from fans

After spending his first four NBA seasons with the Dallas Mavericks, New Jersey native Jalen Brunson signed a four-year contract with the New York Knicks in July 2022.

Brunson broke out in his first season in a Knicks uniform.

He was one of the key pieces on a Knicks team that finished in the top 10 in offensive efficiency last season. New York also ended a decade-long drought of winning a playoff series.

Brunson’s performance in the 2023-24 season was even more impressive, making him the first point guard to be named an NBA All-Star.

Brunson joined the Eastern Conference team as a reserve. He played in 47 games this season, averaging 27.1 points and 6.4 assists.

The 27-year-old’s strong play led the Knicks to 32 wins with just over two weeks left until the All-Star break.

Following reports that the Lakers are considering a move for LeBron James, LeBron James’ agent says there will be no trade.

Brunson finished Thursday’s game against the Indiana Pacers with 40 points. It was the same night he learned he had earned his first All-Star selection. During the post-game on-court interview, Blouson seemed overcome with emotion as fans chanted “MVP”.

Brunson fell just short of being named an All-Star starter, tied with Milwaukee Bucks star Damian Lillard in total weighted score. The fan vote gave Lillard the advantage.

“I mean, there’s nothing to say,” Brunson said. “I have nothing to say.”

Brunson’s teammate, Julius Randle, was also named to the Eastern Conference All-Star team. Randle is expected to be out for at least two weeks with a dislocated shoulder. He won’t be able to suit up for the All-Star Game on Feb. 18 at the Pacers’ Gainbridge Fieldhouse.

Randle was injured during the Knicks’ game against the Miami Heat on January 27th.

“We kept fighting,” Brunson said of the Knicks overcoming Thursday night’s deficit. “No matter what, we’re going to keep fighting. That’s what we do. We’re going to keep fighting every night, especially here. It’s unbelievable here.”
