New York City’s festivities marking the Knicks’ first NBA championship in over five decades were interrupted by gunfire early Sunday in Times Square, resulting in a teenager being hospitalized, according to police reports.

An NYPD spokesperson indicated that officers addressed a shooting incident near 42nd Street and Broadway around 2:01 a.m. A 17-year-old male sustained a gunshot wound to the left leg and was transported to Bellevue Hospital, where he is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities apprehended three individuals connected to the incident, and a firearm was seized on-site.

This shooting incident occurred just hours after thousands of fans took to the streets of Manhattan to celebrate the Knicks’ historic win—their first NBA title since 1973.

The Knicks triumphed over the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals held in Texas on Saturday, marking a significant moment for the franchise and sending the city into a frenzy of celebration.

The team dramatically overcame a 29-point deficit earlier in the series to gain a 3-1 lead against the Spurs.

After the victory, some visuals of unruly crowds began circulating on social media, showing two individuals damaging an NYPD vehicle by jumping on its roof and smashing the windshield. Other clips depicted people climbing onto nearby school buses.

In another video, a police officer was seen apprehending a Knicks fan amid the celebrations. While the championship game took place far from the city, a notable police presence was established around Madison Square Garden, the home of the Knicks.

Prior to the game, Mayor Zoran Mamdani had urged fans to celebrate responsibly if the Knicks secured their first NBA title in over 50 years. He shared on social media, “As we celebrate, let’s be responsible, look out for each other, stay safe, act smart, and make this a night that reflects the best of our city. Let’s go, Knicks.”

Police had initially lifted a ban on watch parties outside Madison Square Garden due to noise complaints from fans.

Despite those cautions, some celebrations veered into chaos following the game’s conclusion. Officers clad in riot gear and mounted on horseback attempted to manage the considerable crowds that filled the streets post-victory.

Additional footage from the celebration depicted police making arrests. The NYPD informed that updates regarding the number of arrests would be made available later in the day.

Michael Rapaport criticized Knicks’ leadership for the postgame disturbances, stating he wouldn’t watch further games before running for mayor.

Emergency officials cautioned the public to anticipate road closures and possible traffic delays in the areas surrounding Madison Square Garden. Authorities additionally encouraged those celebrating to heed instructions from the NYPD.
