Knicks NBA championship celebration descends into chaos as police make arrests

Celebrations Turn Chaotic After Knicks’ NBA Championship Win

New Yorkers were in high spirits following the Knicks’ first NBA championship in more than half a century. However, celebrations in the city took a chaotic turn with reports of police arrests and vandalism scattered across Manhattan.

The Knicks triumphed over the San Antonio Spurs with a score of 94-90 during Game 5 of the NBA Finals held in Texas on Saturday. This victory marked the team’s first championship win since 1973, sending the city into a frenzy of joy.

In the aftermath of this historic achievement, some videos surfaced on social media depicting celebratory unrest. One particularly striking clip featured two individuals jumping on top of an NYPD vehicle, breaking its windshield—a clear sign of how quickly things escalated.

The Knicks’ comeback from a 29-point deficit to secure a 3-1 lead in the Finals against the Spurs was nothing short of miraculous.

Other footage showed fans climbing onto school buses near Times Square, adding to the spectacle, and although the pivotal game took place far from home, police officers maintained a strong presence around Madison Square Garden, the Knicks’ iconic arena.

In anticipation of the game, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani had called for a responsible celebration, encouraging fans to look out for one another and make the evening a reflection of the city’s best qualities. He shared on social media, “Let’s go to the Knicks.”

Despite the mayor’s call for calm, many celebrants turned chaotic once the final buzzer sounded. Riot-geared officers on horseback attempted to manage the throngs of exuberant fans spilling into the streets after the win.

Additional videos depict arrests being made during these celebrations. The NYPD has indicated it will provide an update on the total number of arrests later in the day.

Emergency officials warned everyone to expect road closures and traffic delays around Madison Square Garden while urging people to listen to police instructions.

This story is still developing, and further updates will be provided as new information comes to light.
