Knicks’ playoff journey challenges this Tom Thibodeau description

Knicks Coach Tom Thibodeau: Adapting in the Playoffs

Reputation can often tell a story, but the reality is sometimes quite different. The Knicks seem to focus more on the reality than the perception.

The narrative around Director Tom Thibodeau—often seen as inflexible and unyielding—has followed him for years. Yet, players today seem to view things differently. Josh Hart, following a recent practice, acknowledged this. “Once you get a label, it can be hard to shake it off,” he noted. “But look at those playoff series against the Pistons and Celtics. He’s shown he’s willing to adapt and try new strategies. It’s clear he trusts us and wants to do things differently this time around.”

Hart continued, pointing out that the labels given to Thibodeau have been largely static over the past decade. “But the past couple of series illustrate a different side; he’s shown an ability to adjust as the situation demands.”

So what specific changes has Thibodeau made?

According to Hart, a notable shift from previous seasons is Thibodeau’s strategy regarding defensive switches. “He changed up the approach against the Celtics compared to during the regular season,” Hart explained. “We played a drop coverage then, but now he’s making some tough decisions on who to rotate in and out. He really laid out a solid game plan that gave us a lot of confidence.”

The Knicks have consistently asserted that they’re not less tough than last year’s team; rather, they are different, with their unique set of strengths and weaknesses. And that perspective certainly includes Thibodeau.

This season presented challenges, but it also allowed Thibodeau to leverage new strengths effectively, propelling the Knicks further than they’ve been in many years.

“You have to analyze what each team brings to the table,” Thibodeau mentioned recently. “Every year presents a new challenge, whether from draft picks, trades, or returning injured players. It’s about figuring out how to make it all work together.”

Updates on the Knicks’ Postseason Journey

“We need to keep striving for improvement every day, even if there are some setbacks,” Thibodeau said. “Then we have to regroup and move forward.”

This season, the Knicks faced a tough road, going 1-3 against the Pistons and 0-4 against the Celtics in the regular season, yet they managed to eliminate both teams in the playoffs. Clearly, adjustments have indeed been made.

“There are lots of misunderstandings about us,” Jalen Branson mentioned. “But that’s fine. We’ll focus on what’s within our control and let them say what they want.”
