Knicks proposed a trade for Kevin Durant during the deadline, according to NBA insider.

Following Tom Thibodeau’s departure, it appears the Knicks are gearing up for some significant changes as they look ahead to the next season.

Kevin Durant seems poised to leave Phoenix, and if New York decides to make a few calls, it might not be all that surprising, according to at least one NBA insider.

“There was mutual interest between Kevin Durant and the Knicks during the trade deadline,” Shams Charania mentioned on ESPN recently. “The Knicks did make an offer for Durant at that time.”

Despite staying with the Suns, who finished 11th in the Western Conference, there are indications that Durant might be on the move this offseason, as reported by ESPN’s Brian Windhorst.

With the Eastern Conference landscape shifting—especially after two teams have captured NBA Finals titles—New York may need to mix things up if they’re serious about competing.

“Changes have been made to the Knicks’ lineup,” Charania added. “Now, are they eyeing a star player? Perhaps someone like Giannis Antetokounmpo or again looking at Durant?”

Getting a player of Antetokounmpo’s caliber might be tricky for the Knicks. They’ve already given up a lot, including Mikal Bridges and multiple first-round picks. Still, a trade for Durant could be feasible.

The Coach’s Roller Coaster: Head Coach Tom Thibodeau’s Tenure

Thibodeau, who is now entering the last year of his contract—worth over $50 million—is in a tricky spot.

However, it seems likely that multiple players would have to be included in any deal to bring Durant to New York, possibly impacting the team’s depth significantly.

Many other teams are expected to pursue Durant as well, believing that he could be the key to their championship aspirations. Among those rumored are the Spurs, Timberwolves, Rockets, and Mavericks, all of whom are aiming high in terms of talent acquisition.
