Knicks’ roster competition shrinks due to serious Drew Eubanks injury

Knicks Lose Candidate for Final Roster Spot

The competition for the Knicks’ last roster position has one less player. Veteran center Drew Eubanks has suffered a torn pectoral muscle, leading to his impending release by the team, as confirmed by a source this Thursday morning.

Eubanks was one of three centers with non-guaranteed contracts in training camp, alongside James Wiseman and Tony Bradley. A couple of weeks ago, Wiseman was reported to be the leading candidate for the 14th roster spot. His recent performance—scoring 18 points and grabbing 10 rebounds during Tuesday’s game against Toronto—seems to have strengthened his chances even further.

Coach Mike Brown recently shared what he hopes to see from the player who ultimately secures the role. He emphasized the need for “passion and energy” from that position. “I’m sure at times that person will start, at times they may be the first backup and at times they may be the second backup,” said Brown. He noted that as playing time varies, the player will have to generate their own energy, especially in those low-minute situations.

He added, “Sometimes they might not play for one or two, maybe three games straight. Ultimately, you’re just looking for someone who will play hard and fulfill the game’s demands on both ends of the floor. It helps if they can bring something unique compared to the other two players ahead of them.”

At 29, Eubanks had the most experience among the candidates, with eight seasons in the NBA, including last year with the Sacramento Kings. In the recent loss to Toronto, he played 15 minutes, contributing eight points and two rebounds.

The Knicks are at a point where they can only retain one more player while remaining under the salary cap’s second apron. Veteran guard Bruce Brown is also on a non-guaranteed deal in training camp, but the team’s focus seems to be on adding another center. Retaining Brown would require the Knicks to make some salary adjustments through trades.
