Knicks Prepare for NBA Cup with Playoff-Like Atmosphere
LAS VEGAS — It’s about as close as it gets.
Sure, the NBA Cup isn’t exactly the playoffs. But for the Knicks, it’s still a chance to experience a high-stakes atmosphere.
If we think about it, a game like this early in the season is pretty unique; it’s probably going to be the only time elimination is really on the line for a while.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to be in a playoff-type atmosphere and understand what’s at stake,” said Karl-Anthony Towns. “We need to show ourselves how disciplined we have to be to win these types of games. Execution is key; it’s something we need to build on consistently to meet our goals as a team.”
But let’s not forget, this group isn’t new to the pressure of playoffs.
Having reached the Eastern Conference Finals last year, the core of the team is still mainly the same.
However, the value of these games extends beyond just on-court execution.
There’s been a lot of buzz in the media, which isn’t usually the case for mid-season games. Before the game against the Magic, reporters surrounded the team, asking all sorts of questions.
Some social media influencers even posed what might seem like silly questions just for clicks.
The Knicks had a significant number of reporters watching their practice, which, to be honest, isn’t common at their usual venue in Tarrytown.
So, the media spotlight is going to be intense during the playoffs. The Knicks are accustomed to that, having gone through it last year, but they believe revisiting it midseason is beneficial.
“Yeah, definitely,” Jalen Brunson said. “This atmosphere is crucial for us, and we’re really looking forward to the opportunity it presents.”
Coach Mike Brown, who’s been part of six NBA Finals either as a head coach or assistant, understands the distractions that media attention can bring.
His team is even speculating about their chances of making the Finals this year.
Brown hopes his players will take this experience in Las Vegas as a lesson for the second half of the season.
Interestingly enough, he wasn’t always a fan of the NBA Cup concept.
Initially skeptical, he now acknowledges the benefits these games provide.
“You have to give the NBA credit,” Brown mentioned. “When the Cup idea was introduced, I was one to question its timing in the season. But over time, starting with Adam Silver, it’s clear that innovation is vital to the NBA. This has turned out to be a valuable experience for everyone involved.”
“Winning in elimination games becomes a habit,” Brown added. “More chances to win are always welcome.”
“This is just another chance to win something,” Brunson said. “So you have to go out and compete.”
