Incident at Texas Tech Game Raises Concerns

Officials from Texas Tech have confirmed a disturbing event during a recent game against Kansas. A pocket knife was reportedly thrown towards the Jayhawks’ sideline, echoing claims made by Kansas head coach Lance Leipold.

Lubbock schools have a tradition where fans sometimes toss tortillas onto the field. But after a vote to ban this practice—only one person opposed the decision—fans continued the behavior. Some apparently took things a step too far.

“A pocket knife was thrown and it hit one of the staff members. I mean, it’s ridiculous,” Leipold stated after Kansas suffered a 42-17 defeat to the Red Raiders. He highlighted safety as the main concern, mentioning how certain traditions have persisted despite attempts to change them. “Unfortunately, somebody ends up getting seriously injured,” he added.

Later, it was confirmed that a knife was found on the Jayhawks’ side of the field. Leipold criticized Big 12 officials, saying they had “acted poorly” considering the new regulations against throwing objects.

During a heated postgame handshake with Texas Tech’s head coach, Joey McGuire, Leipold did not hold back. He voiced his frustration, calling the incident “bullish–.”

McGuire acknowledged the frustration shared by both coaches, but pointed out that the rules were clear. “It’s frustrating. We know the rule, we didn’t follow it, and we got a penalty,” he explained, noting that the Red Raiders received two 15-yard penalties for fan misconduct.

The pocket knife has been turned over to Texas Tech University and to their police department. The school is also considering reviewing game day footage related to the incident.

The Red Raiders, currently ranked No. 7 in the Associated Press poll, are set to face Arizona State in their next game, aiming to improve their record to 7-0.
