Cellebrite’s Insights on Kohberger’s Online Activity
Cellebrite’s Heather and Jared Barnhart analyzed Bryan Kohberger’s search history and data extracted from his phone. Their findings raise intriguing questions about what he was looking up.
Interestingly, Kohberger’s lawyers asked prosecutors to avoid labeling him as a “psychopath” or any specific terms during his trial. The investigation revealed that he frequently searched for information about mass murderers, suggesting a profound interest, possibly morbid, in the subject.
Heather Barnhart, a senior director at Cellebrite, mentioned that “psychopath” was a term he often typed into his browser. He claimed these searches were related to his academic focus or research. Along with that, he also looked up terms like “psychopathic fantasy” and spent time on Christmas nights studying serial killers.
There was even a mention of how Kohberger seemed to embody characteristics similar to those in the film “American Psycho.” Barnhart noted how he had become somewhat of a fixation, or perhaps a “delusion,” in the minds of those studying his behavior.
Before pleading guilty, Kohberger’s defense team attempted to curb the terms associated with him, citing they could jeopardize his right to a fair trial. The idea was that labeling him could unfairly sway public opinion.
Kohberger had been convicted for the brutal stabbing of four University of Idaho students almost three years ago. His case has drawn widespread attention, with many wondering what drove him to commit such acts. An analysis by Jared Barnhart revealed that he had successfully deleted significant amounts of information that could shine a light on his motivations.
He had employed software to erase data from his computer, including a history that spanned from October to mid-November. This raises other questions; was he hiding something or just trying to cover his tracks?
In reflecting on the tragedy, Heather Barnhart expressed how vital it is for families of the victims to seek closure. She emphasized the pain of unanswered questions that linger after such events. Why did this happen to my child? That confusion and heartbreak are what they’re trying to make sense of.
