Connor Griffin’s New Adventure Before Opening Day

Before aiming for a spot on the Pirates’ Opening Day roster, standout prospect Connor Griffin embarked on his “first adventure” as a newlywed.

The 19-year-old shortstop, who is considered MLB’s number one prospect heading into the 2026 season, enjoyed his honeymoon in Mexico with his wife, Dendi, whom he married earlier this year.

“My first adventure with my wife,” Griffin shared on Instagram, alongside pictures from their January vacation, where they relaxed by the pool with a stunning beach backdrop.

Griffin, chosen ninth overall by the Pirates in the 2024 MLB Draft, tied the knot with his high school sweetheart Dendi in January.

The bride looked radiant in a strapless gown, while Griffin sported a stylish black tuxedo for their wedding at Castle Hill in Oxford, Mississippi.

After their honeymoon, Griffin and Dendy quickly headed to Florida for spring training. Many are eager to see when this impressive 6-foot-4 prospect will make his major league debut.

Feeling optimistic, Griffin expressed, “I have complete confidence in the front office, the coaches, and everyone involved. They’ve handled everything well, allowing me to grow in the minor leagues and face new challenges.” In a recent chat with ESPN, he also mentioned, “I’m trying not to dwell on it too much. There’s a lot of noise, and I’m just treating it like I did last spring.”

He added, “I aimed to absorb everything from experienced players, and I plan to do the same this year. I know I have a shot at the majors soon, and that would be fantastic, but I want to be prepared.” Recently, he displayed his skills by hitting two home runs in an exhibition game against the Red Sox.

The Pirates recognize Griffin’s “tremendous” talent, but according to 2025 National League Cy Young Award winner Paul Skeens, his abilities extend beyond just athleticism.

Skeens remarked, “I went to church every Sunday, I never cursed, and I got married at 19. It’s not typical, but nothing about Griffin is ordinary. He embraces what sets him apart. If you want to pursue the unusual, it starts with thinking outside the box. And he certainly does.”

Last season, the Pirates concluded at the bottom of the National League Central Division, finishing with 71 wins and 91 losses.

The team kicks off the 2026 season on the road against the Mets on March 26th.
