Kremlin Signals Need for Negotiation as Conflict Escalates
The Kremlin stated on Thursday that Ukraine will inevitably have to engage in negotiations with Russia, suggesting that its position is deteriorating daily amidst ongoing hostilities. The comments come as Russia maintains its offensive operations against Ukraine.
Kremlin Spokesman Dmitry Peskov remarked that Moscow is open to a peace agreement, but criticized Ukraine for allegedly rejecting peace talks, which he believes are prolonging the conflict that has persisted for over three years. He cautioned that continued fighting only diminishes Ukraine’s negotiation power, stating that the situation is not in the nation’s best interest while Russia’s offensive continues.
“The Ukrainian side should know that sooner or later it will have to negotiate from a worse position. The Kiev regime’s position will worsen day by day,” Peskov noted.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, in a post on X, urged for “increased pressure on Russia,” asserting that Russia seems to be preparing for broader hostilities across Europe.
“From what’s happening on the battlefield, I don’t think Russia is planning to back down. It’s apparent that their defense production is ramping up, suggesting they intend to continue this war,” Zelenskiy expressed.
“If we apply substantial pressure, perhaps Russia will need to pause. They seem to be gearing up for a large-scale conflict possibly around 2029 or 2030 in Europe—this presents a considerable challenge,” he added.
“We need to strategize on how to halt their advances in Ukraine and minimize their capabilities. It’s crucial to avoid enabling them financially, and we shouldn’t be supplying them with weapons. This is a pressing concern we must address,” he emphasized.
In addition, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio conveyed on Wednesday that the US would only meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin if there is a clear path to “concrete results,” pointing out that prior peace initiatives have not led to a ceasefire.
“Both sides agreed that the next time the presidents convene, it must lead to tangible outcomes. We must approach this with the expectation of a productive result,” Rubio stated.
“We sincerely hope for that outcome and want the war to conclude, but we can’t keep meeting just for the sake of meetings,” he added.
