Homeland Security Secretary Highlights Immigration Achievements
Kristi Noem, the Secretary of Homeland Security, expressed pride on Wednesday regarding the significant increase in the number of foreign nationals acquiring U.S. citizenship.
During an appearance on “The Ingraham Angle,” President Donald Trump emphasized the necessity of attracting foreigners with skills that he believes are lacking among Americans. On “Fox & Friends,” Noem confirmed that the Trump administration will persist with the visa program, while ensuring a thorough vetting process for applicants.
“We will continue using the visa program, but we have to ensure that those applying are honest and vetted properly, that they have genuine intentions for coming here, and that they’re not linked to terrorist organizations or groups that oppose America,” Noem stated. “What’s been notable under the Trump administration is the acceleration of the process and the enhancement of integrity within the visa system and green card applications.”
She added, “Moreover, more people are becoming citizens under this administration than ever before. We’re not just refining our immigration policies but ensuring a greater number of individuals are obtaining citizenship. It’s important to verify that those coming are doing so for the right reasons.”
Trump also pointed out that many foreigners possess more expertise than Americans in areas like battery manufacturing. His statements regarding the H-1B visa sparked some criticism, particularly from fellow Republicans.
In September, the president instituted a $100,000 fee for H-1B visa applicants following concerns from certain administration officials that these workers were replacing average American employees with lower wages.
The H-1B program serves as the main gateway for highly skilled foreign nationals seeking to enter the U.S. According to U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, holders of these visas can eventually apply for permanent resident status, enabling them to stay in the country indefinitely.
