Kristi Noem responds to calls from 'radicals' for her resignation following the fatal shootings in Minneapolis: 'I'm just doing my job'

Homeland Security Secretary Faces Pressure Following Shootings

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended her actions following widespread calls for her resignation after two mass shootings involving federal immigration agents in Minneapolis. One of the incidents, which she had originally supported, led to some controversy.

In a more subdued appearance on Fox News with Sean Hannity, Noem addressed the bipartisan backlash regarding the deaths of two American anti-ICE protesters at the hands of federal agents.

“Extremists are attacking me, but I’m just doing my job,” Noem stated during the interview. She emphasized that she was enforcing the law as part of President Trump’s commitment to keeping Americans safe, asserting, “We will continue to pursue criminals and take them down before they have the opportunity to kill more Americans.”

Noem quickly backed Border Patrol agents after armed protester Alex Preti was shot nearly ten times by them when tensions were high in Minneapolis. She claimed that Preti, a 37-year-old ICU nurse, had confronted the agents with a 9mm semi-automatic handgun and opened fire.

However, footage from the scene showed Preti approaching the agents only with her cell phone. During the incident, she was pepper-sprayed and wrestled to the ground. Notably, an officer had removed her legally owned handgun just moments before the shooting.

DHS investigators believe that an accidental discharge from Preti’s handgun may have triggered the Border Patrol agents to open fire, resulting in her death. Noem later labeled Preti a domestic terrorist attempting to “murder law enforcement,” stating that her initial information came from officers present at the scene.

“You know the situation was very chaotic,” she admitted, explaining that they were updating information based on what was reported by Border Patrol agents on the ground.

“We aimed to be transparent with the American people about what we knew to be true,” she added, vowing to follow the FBI-led investigation closely and provide necessary information.

In addition, she criticized left-wing politicians for exacerbating an already tense situation, although even some Republicans raised concerns about the aggressive tactics used by federal agents in Minnesota.

This incident was the second fatal shooting involving federal immigration agents in Minnesota within a short span. On January 7, ICE officer Jonathan Ross shot and killed Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, asserting she had driven her car into him, also branding her a domestic terrorist.

These incidents have ignited protests throughout the state, with officials urging President Trump to withdraw ICE from Minnesota to alleviate public unrest.

The White House supported Noem, who had a lengthy meeting with President Trump and the DHS chief of staff recently. Yet, amid the escalating situation, Trump deployed “border czar” Tom Homan to Minnesota, leaving Noem in an uncertain position within the administration.

Moreover, aggressive Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino has been directed to return to his home base, while White House Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller, who had previously disparaged Preti, acknowledged that procedures might not have been correctly followed, asserting his comments were based on preliminary reports from CBP.
