Extradition Pursuit for Murder Suspect
Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem is actively seeking the extradition of Mexican nationals involved in the murder of a 24-year-old woman in an Illinois apartment. This incident has sparked scrutiny towards Democrat JB Pritzker.
The primary suspect, Gabriel P. Calix, faces charges of first-degree murder and domestic battery for the alleged stabbing of Emma Schafer in Springfield, Illinois, back in July 2023. At the time of the crime, Calix was in the United States unlawfully.
“A vicious murderer has been evading justice for two years after the tragic death of 24-year-old Emma Schafer. We will be collaborating with federal authorities to expedite the extradition process,” Noem stated in a press release. “Our thanks go to law enforcement for bringing this criminal to justice.”
The announcement may result in an increased deployment of National Guard troops and ICE agents, as the Trump administration contemplates intensifying crime-fighting measures in Chicago.
Noem urged Governor Pritzker and other leaders in Illinois to reconsider their sanctuary policies, expressing a need for a return to law and order for the safety of American citizens.
In May, Noem held a press conference in Springfield where she criticized the state’s immigration practices.
Pritzker has expressed firm opposition to the ongoing potential deployment of National Guard troops in Washington, D.C., considering such actions a deterrent against crime. Democrats have remarked that deploying military personnel in urban areas is “non-American.”
According to Pritzker, “The U.S. government shouldn’t impose military forces on our cities. While we certainly need help addressing crime, using military personnel is not the solution.”
The recent criminal crackdown in Washington, D.C., has seen the arrest of hundreds of undocumented immigrants, including members of notorious gangs like Tren de Aragua and MS-13. While many Democrats are against military deployment, there is a complex discussion surrounding the federal strategies for improving security, which include enhanced police surveillance and patrolling.
Noem’s actions have drawn focus to how local and state leaders manage undocumented immigrants in Chicago.
Calix, arrested by Mexican authorities on August 28, 2025, is charged with the murder of Emma Schafer.
“In just a matter of weeks, we’ve seen improvements,” noted D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser on Wednesday, citing a reduction in illegal firearms.
“We believe that systemic accountability can curtail illegal activities. The evidence suggests that gun crimes, murders, and carjackings are decreasing,” Bowser added.
Fox News Digital has reached out to Pritzker’s office for further comment.
