Noem Defends Multi-Million Dollar Jet Contracts Amid Controversy
The Secretary of Homeland Security, Kristi Noem, has come under fire for a contract exceeding $170 million to procure new jets for the U.S. Coast Guard, including those intended for her travel.
This move has drawn criticism from Congressional Democrats who have raised concerns about issuing such contracts during a government shutdown.
Noem responded to the backlash on Monday, emphasizing that the funding was previously allocated. “These are Coast Guard aircraft that will replace aircraft over 25 years old, essential for our mission. Congress had appropriated those funds already in the previous budget, and we are thankful to move ahead,” she said.
The funding for these jets stemmed from a last-minute addition to Congress’s budget back in May, prompting heightened scrutiny, especially since Noem already had access to similar planes. Both she and the Coast Guard cited the need due to the aging fleet.
Concerns over the purchase were echoed in a letter from House Appropriations Committee Ranking Member Rosa DeLauro (D-Conn.) and Rep. Lauren Underwood (D-Ill.), who sought further details about the acquisition.
Their message noted, “During the government shutdown, we found out that the U.S. Coast Guard entered an exclusive sourcing deal with Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation to obtain two new G700 luxury jets for your and the Deputy Secretary’s travel, costing taxpayers $200 million.” They criticized Noem for seemingly prioritizing her needs over those of Coast Guard personnel.
This letter alluded to Noem staying in Coast Guard housing after receiving threats, as typically, the chief would use quarters dedicated to Coast Guard commanders.
Interestingly, this contracted amount far exceeded the Department of Homeland Security’s original request of $50 million for new aircraft.
Democrats were particularly vocal about Noem proceeding with the jet orders while the government was shut down. Senator Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) remarked, “The over $170 million that Secretary Noem is allocating for luxury jets could be used to pay the salaries of TSA and air traffic controllers.” He added, “She should prioritize essential workers instead of elevating her stature above dedicated public servants.”
