Scandal Involving Boston’s Wealthy Families

At the center of a recent viral scandal are HR executives who are tied to one of Boston’s oldest and most affluent families.

A social media update indicates that one executive might be stepping away from his position as an astronomer, following a rather embarrassing incident involving a Jumbotron at a recent event.

Christine Cabot was filmed on the Jumbotron during a Coldplay concert, sharing a moment with Astronomy CEO Andy Byron.

Byron has highlighted his family’s lineage, claiming to own the sixth generation of a longstanding rum brand, originally founded by Andrew Cabot.

The Cabot family’s fortune has spanned generations. It was reportedly valued at $200 million back in 1972, but has grown to about $15.4 billion in 2025, according to a profile from New York Times.

It’s uncertain when Christine and Andrew tied the knot, but this marks at least their second marriage. Notably, her previous divorce was finalized not too long ago, in 2022.

A now-deleted LinkedIn profile for Kristin Cabot revealed he has held a position as an “advisory board member” for Privateer Rum since September 2020.

They reportedly acquired a $2.2 million property along the New Hampshire coast earlier in the year.

The Cabot family belongs to the original “Boston Brahmin” class that has held significant influence in New England for centuries, alongside notable families like the Irish Catholic Kennedys.

Their wealth has primarily stemmed from soot, known in industrial terms as “carbon black,” which is a crucial ingredient used in tire manufacturing, tracing back ten generations in New England.

Historically, the Cabot family has been involved in various New England enterprises, including rum production.

Samuel Cabot, a key figure in the family, started their journey to wealth by marrying Eliza Perkins, the daughter of a prosperous merchant.

In the wake of the scandal, several photos showcasing a seemingly happy family have surfaced and circulated across Christine Cabot’s social media accounts.

The Cabots are so prominent in Boston society that it’s said “only God speaks to Cabots.”

A saying goes, “And this is just the good old Boston/Beans and Tara House/Lowell talks to Cabot/, and Cabot speaks only to God.”

In the past, the Cabot family participated in the slave-opium trade during the early 19th century. Over the years, they have also contributed to various educational institutions in New England, such as Harvard University, MIT, Norwich University, and Perkins School for the Blind.

Frances Cabot, a New York heir, once remarked about his family, “I’ve been interested in two things: marrying a rich woman and leading a group song.”
