Kristin Chenoweth Reflects on Backlash Following Charlie Kirk’s Death

Kristin Chenoweth recently shared that the response to her remarks about Charlie Kirk’s death was emotionally challenging for her, stating it “almost broke my heart.”

Speaking to the Hollywood Reporter, the 57-year-old actress admitted, “It’s been difficult for me.” However, she chose not to delve deeper into the matter, saying, “I’ve dealt with it.” She emphasized her struggle, remarking, “It almost broke me, and that’s all I’m going to say. You probably know my heart, so you probably know too.”

Charlie Kirk, a conservative commentator, tragically passed away at the age of 31 after being shot on stage during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10.

In her tribute, Chenoweth expressed her sorrow in the comments of an Instagram post from Kirk’s nonprofit, Turning Point USA. She wrote, “I am so, so upset. I didn’t always agree, but I appreciated some points of view. How heartbreaking. His young family,” referencing his wife Erica Kirk and their two children. She added, “I know where he is now. Heaven. Still.”

In an Instagram Story, Chenoweth labeled the shooting a “sad, senseless and disgusting act” and urged her followers to “pray for the Kirk family.” While she was among many celebrities who mourned Kirk’s passing, her comments sparked criticism due to her known anti-LGBTQ+ views, causing a stir among her fan base, which largely includes that community.

Tearfully addressing the backlash in an interview with NY1’s Frank DiLella, she reflected on the mixed reactions her comments received. When asked about the criticisms, she replied, “Cons? You’re being kind.”

DiLella pointed out her considerable LGBTQ+ following and questioned her intentions behind expressing her sadness for someone who opposed same-sex marriage. Chenoweth acknowledged her emotions had run high during the situation.

Days later, she expressed remorse for unintentionally hurting others. “I had a moment of reflection as a human being when I saw what happened online with my own eyes,” she explained, referring to the graphic footage from the incident. She recognized that her remarks affected some individuals deeply, saying, “I would never have done that.”

Chenoweth, who identifies as a Christian and an advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, pointed out that she understands how some see her beliefs as contradictory. Yet, she insisted that for her, these perspectives coexist harmoniously.
