Christine Davis Shares Behind-the-Scenes Experience from “Melrose Place”
Christine Davis recently opened up about her time on “Melrose Place,” discussing a less-than-friendly co-star from the iconic ’90s soap. During her appearance on the podcast “Hey Dude… The ’90s Call!”, the actress expressed her excitement about landing the role of Brooke Armstrong in the show’s third season, which aired from 1995 to 1996. She described the moment as feeling like “winning the lottery.”
Yet, it wasn’t all smooth sailing. Davis admitted to feeling a lack of confidence while on set, particularly because of the competitive atmosphere. She mentioned a specific cast member who seemed distant, stating, “There were so many people there… a lot of them are so nice. But then… it was competitive.” Davis recalled trying to engage with this particular co-star, saying “Good morning,” but never getting a response.
In a way, that competitive nature was something that other actors experienced too. Host Christine Taylor noted that actors often guarded themselves against perceived threats to their roles. It clicks, doesn’t it? The pressure to maintain a job can lead to such awkward dynamics.
Interestingly, Davis found that time softened those past experiences. Now, she sees that same co-star being friendly. “She’s so nice to me now,” Davis reflected, but there’s a hint of contradiction when she added, “Sometimes I remember, ‘Do you remember that she wasn’t that kind to me?'”
Davis contrasted this with her time on “Sex and the City,” where she made it a point to greet new cast members warmly. She recalled, “I remember that horrifying feeling so I quickly went out there and tried to be like, ‘Hello.’ It was scary.” Despite facing aloofness on “Melrose Place,” Davis described her overall experience on the show as “surprising” and expressed some disappointment over her relatively brief time there. “I mean, I grew up watching shows like ‘Dallas’ and ‘Dynasty,'” she shared, emphasizing how significant being on the show was for her.
Reflecting on her character, Davis mentioned that Brooke’s journey ended dramatically when her character fell to her demise in the “Devil’s Wet Dress” episode.
Further into her conversation, she shared that she had beaten out Hilary Swank during auditions for the role of Brooke. “It was Hilary Swank, a girl named Me and Me,” she recalled, providing a glimpse into the competition for parts that can be fierce and nerve-wracking.
Davis also touched on appearance pressures, noting how many actresses had short hair during that era, which made her consider cutting her long locks at one point. Yet she ultimately held back, reflecting on the supportive atmosphere she encountered during her auditions. “Everyone was so kind,” she said, recalling how the audition environment felt friendly rather than intimidating.
In summary, Davis’s journey through “Melrose Place” was a mix of excitement and challenges, shaped by both personal experiences and the competitive nature of the industry. She seems to value those moments, even the tough ones, as they contributed to her growth as an actress.
