Kyle Schwarber reflects on his unpredictable future with the Phillies

Kyle Schwarber had an active role in the NLDS against the Dodgers and left the playoffs undefeated.

In 2022, the Phillies faced disappointment, not only losing once again after two years of early playoff exits but also falling short in the World Series. There was a lingering concern that the three-time All-Star might be playing his last game for the Philadelphia team.

On Thursday night, that possibility became a reality when Game 4 concluded with a heartbreaking 2-1 defeat in the 11th inning.

Once the game ended, Schwarber was visibly emotional during his postgame interview.

“It doesn’t feel good, does it?” he reflected. “In the clubhouse, you form different bonds. You never know how things will pan out, right? The time spent with teammates creates strong personal relationships; they become like family. I hold deep respect for everyone here—players, coaches, and the whole organization.”

“This organization is top-tier, and many of us feel fortunate to play for a team that aims for championships every single year. Our fans are passionate, our ownership cares, and so do our coaches. Everyone in that room is dedicated to winning, and that’s what makes it hard leaving.”

In 2022, Schwarber signed a four-year, $79 million deal with the Phillies after declining his option with the Red Sox in 2021.

During his time in Philadelphia, he secured two of his three All-Star selections, earned the Silver Slugger Award in 2022, and even took home the All-Star MVP earlier this season, finding himself in MVP talks while in the City of Brotherly Love.

If this was indeed Schwarber’s last season with the Phillies, he seemed to leave on a positive note.

The 32-year-old finished the regular season setting a career high with 56 home runs, bringing his overall total to 340 across 11 seasons in MLB. He also achieved a personal best of 132 RBIs while maintaining a .240 batting average with an OPS of .928.

On August 28, during a blowout win over the Braves, Schwarber astonishingly hit four home runs and brought in nine RBIs—marking the first time he accomplished this feat in a single game.

Although his playoff batting average dipped to .188, he managed to hit two home runs in Game 3, contributing to an 8-2 Phillies victory over the Dodgers.

The Phillies’ season ended disappointingly, marked by a critical error in the 11th inning. Pitcher Orion Kirkeling faltered, throwing a wild pitch to home plate instead of making the easier throw to first base.

Throughout his four seasons with the Phillies, Schwarber reached the postseason each year, winning consecutive NL East titles. However, he fell short of clinching a second World Series, having previously won with the Cubs in 2016.
