Kyle Shanahan had his phone in hand during car accident, according to report

Information regarding the car accident involving 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan remains sparse.

Nonetheless, a report from SI’s Grant Cohn suggests a new detail; it appears Shanahan had a cell phone on him during the incident, although it was the other driver who was deemed responsible for the collision.

Cohn uncovered this information via a government website.

On Saturday, the 49ers released a statement about the accident, coinciding with general manager John Lynch’s remarks to the media as training camp commenced.

Despite the accident happening nearly two weeks prior, journalists aware of the event respected the team’s choice to keep it under wraps.

Of course, this situation has prompted numerous questions. Some people speculate that the confusing aspects might imply possible fault on Shanahan’s part—though that theory has yet to be substantiated. Various reporters and online enthusiasts are actively trying to dig up what they think might be relevant details.

Ultimately, what’s clear is that Shanahan’s car collided with another vehicle close to his residence in Palo Alto, California, shortly after 6 p.m. The 46-year-old suffered significant injuries, including a severe concussion and multiple fractures, with one facial injury requiring 40 stitches.

According to Chris Sims, a close friend of Shanahan, there was even a risk of him losing an eye in the accident. It’s also worth noting that the other driver was a woman.

Shanahan made an appearance at 49ers training camp over the weekend, although he is still in recovery. The team has appointed assistant head coach Chris Forster to take the reins temporarily.
