PEORIA, Ariz. – A promising start for the Dodgers
In a spring training game on Friday night, the Dodgers secured a 10-7 victory over the Seattle Mariners at the Peoria Sports Complex. New addition Kyle Tucker made a significant impact by hitting his first home run with the team, a remarkable 419-foot drive.
Manager Dave Roberts expressed his satisfaction, saying, “It was good for us and it was good for him that he was able to score one point today. Hey, it’s just fun to watch him compete in the batter’s box.”
This home run was particularly thrilling as it came after a tough at-bat. Tucker managed to battle through a full count, facing a challenging two-strike slider from Mariners pitcher Robinson Ortiz, along with a fastball clocked at 168.1 mph.
Roberts highlighted Tucker’s skill, noting it reflects the talented player’s approach. With a four-time All-Star background and a hefty $240 million contract, expectations are high.
Before this standout moment, Tucker had a quiet start to the Cactus League, logging just two hits over 11 at-bats and walking six times. He did miss some time earlier in the month to be with his family for the birth of his first child.
“He seems to keep his ball count to three pitches every at-bat,” Roberts added, acknowledging Tucker’s approach at the plate.
Tucker’s power is a key reason he’s recognized as one of the game’s top offensive threats. His career-high of 30 home runs is notable, achieved in both 2021 and 2022. The Dodgers are hopeful he will shine in his new environment and possibly emerge as an MVP candidate this season.
On Friday, he provided an exciting preview of what’s to come.
Other Takeaways from the Game
Teoscar Hernandez’s Hot Streak: Hernandez continued his strong performance, hitting his second home run in consecutive nights and currently boasts a .467 batting average in camp. Young outfield prospect James Tibbs III also contributed significantly with a home run and a double during the game.
Edgardo Enriquez’s Breakthrough: It’s been a challenging spring for Enriquez, but he finally pitched a shutout on Friday, striking out three batters and retiring the four he faced after earlier struggles with five hits and four walks over his first five games.
Injury Updates: Tommy Edman has resumed batting practice and was seen in the cage for more swings on Friday. Although he will miss the season opener due to offseason ankle surgery, his return isn’t expected to be delayed for long.
Upcoming Game: The Dodgers are set to face the Chicago White Sox on Saturday at their own ballpark, Camelback Ranch, starting at 1:05 p.m.
