Kylian Mbappe, the renowned French soccer player, has concluded a long-standing partnership with Nike, aligning himself with the rapidly expanding Swiss sportswear company, On. This switch not only raises the profile of On, which is backed by Roger Federer, as it forays into the world of football but also deals another blow to Nike, which has seen other prominent athletes shift to emerging competitors.
While the specific financial details of the agreement remain under wraps, On has indicated that it encompasses both cash and equity components.
This transition highlights On’s aspirations to branch out from its roots in running and tennis into the football sector. The company plans to introduce its first football boots in 2027 and has appointed former French football star Thierry Henry as its football director.
Mbappe’s departure further intensifies the challenges facing Nike, which has lost various key athletes to rival brands recently as these new players enter the global sportswear arena.
Ending a relationship that began when he was just 9 years old, this move marks a significant shift for Mbappe. It follows Nike’s recent loss of Spanish World Cup winner Lamine Yamal to Adidas, showcasing a pattern of defections.
“We are proud of what we achieved together on and off the pitch. As he moves into the next phase of his career, we wish him continued success for what comes next,” Nike expressed in a statement.
Despite maintaining a strong presence in France, where it has extended its kit-supply agreement with the national team until the 2033-34 season, Nike seems to be facing challenges.
On’s shares saw a brief increase of 5% in premarket trading, although they later stabilized, signaling that investors were not significantly swayed by the news. Nike’s stock remained relatively unchanged as well.
The company is keen on expanding its presence in the Americas, which currently accounts for over half of its revenue.
This shift is noteworthy as Nike had increasingly relied on Mbappe as a leading representative of the sport, especially with Cristiano Ronaldo approaching the end of his career. Mbappe was a central figure in Nike’s marketing efforts during the recent FIFA World Cup and was featured prominently with special editions of its Mercurial boots.
Reflecting on this new chapter, Mbappe remarked, “Once again it (football) has led me to one of the biggest changes in my life. Now, I find myself surrounded by innovators who dream of the same things I do,” on his social media accounts.
